November 2025 Volume 5, Issue 11

Hello Quilt Friends,

October was another whirlwind month for the Paisley Patch Quilts family! But we’re all home now and other than our annual Thanksgiving and Christmas doings we don’t have any other plans for the rest of the year!!! That means that I get to sleep in my own bed for the next 60 days!

 So, aside from some minor family drama (and who’s family doesn’t experience that from time to time?), my mom’s birthday party went well. Several dozen relatives and friends came to honor and reminisce over the past 90 years of her life. More than once, I heard conversations start with, “Do you remember when……..?” followed by memories from her childhood.

 The best part for me, however, was when my mom’s cousin Susan asked me to follow her out to her car. She wanted me to see something special. My curiosity piqued, I stepped outside and discovered in the trunk a very old cardboard box (circa 1950s?) which was full of patterns, fabric and blocks dating back even further than the container they were in. Susan said she wasn’t sure if these treasures came from my great-grandmother or her sister, my mom’s Aunt Dot. AT that point it didn’t really matter, just that they came from an era well before my time.

 Despite whom they came from I learned a couple of things. One, the quilter was very industrious. Some of the leftover pieces are less than 1” finished and she used everything available to put a quilt together (check out the stamp on the back of the pink piece). And she saved every little just-in-case scrap of fabric if she thought it could be used in something else (sheesh, like someone else I know)!!!

 Also, I found out that the Seattle-Post Intelligencer newspaper used to publish quilting patterns on a regular basis. So far, I found Oct 13, 1929 above the headline and of this funny little article about getting more milk out of your cows printed on the back page of one of those printed patterns.

 I do love history, especially when it involves my family. I marvel at being gifted this treasure and feel truly blessed to have this kind of heritage running through my veins. I can hardly wait to go through the rest of the box and see what’s there.

 Moving on, this year’s business-sponsored trick or treat event was a huge success. Thankfully, we remembered well ahead of time at how we ran woefully short of candy the past two years. I’m grateful we decided to pick up a few extra bags of treats. It was definitely a good move on our part. We ended up with just enough sweets to get through the estimated 1000+ kids that trekked up one side of Main Street and down the other. And what little we had left over went to feed the hungry goblins in my neighborhood.

 Of course, Thanksgiving and Christmas are both within sight and I’m sure there are a number of you who have already jotted down menus for family gatherings and lists that Santa just can’t ignore. At my house lists are written and rewritten a dozen times till I have every detail in place. The downside is that while I know what I want to accomplish, I’m usually scrambling the last few days to get everything done on time. And that typically holds true here at the shop as well. I tell you; nothing is more exciting in my life than getting up early or staying up late to make sure there’s something under the tree for the kids and grandchildren. Not!!!!!

 Anyway, with 2026 just around the corner, we’re already gearing up for some fun things like the Riley Blake Designs Quilt Block Challenge (January), another Mystery Quilt-Along hosted by Kami (January), vending at the Snow Goose Quilt Show in Delta (February) and the Quilt Walk Festival in Panguitch (June). We’re also hoping to add the Utah Quilt Fest in Layton (October) to next year’s lineup. And, there’s more to come, but you’ll have to wait till we have more information to share.

 That’s probably a good jumping off point for me. I just want to end with my deep gratitude for each of you and how you have lifted me every single day for the past five years. Yes, there are some days when I’d like to sleep in a little longer, but once I’m here I look forward to seeing your smiles, swapping a few stories and sharing a common love of quilting and humanity.
