Paisley Dis-Patch Newsletter May 2024

May 2024 Volume 5, Issue 05 (Starts with 1 in January)

Dear Quilting Friends,

I don’t know about you, but once again time has slipped through my fingers and I’m frantically trying to catch up on several projects including this newsletter.

Maybe my lack of organization has something to do with my recent trip to Seattle. I went there to primarily check on my mom’s well-being. She didn’t look so good post-surgery in December. But physically she’s doing just fine now (whew!). Now we have to work on her memory. It’s a little frayed right now. I also got to spend some much-needed time with my daughter, Alisha, and grandson, Joseph, while putting together some Lego figures and watching him play baseball.

Anyway, I spent almost every hour the two weeks before my trip quilting customer projects so I wouldn’t have to worry about leaving the longarm idle while I was gone. Boy, am I glad I did that! I now have a few days that I can get a couple of my own projects done for both the Nephi 4th of July Charity Quilt Auction and the upcoming Payson Quilt Show in September. I’m super excited for both events.

Usually there is a bidding war over the quilts with local university emblems on them (UofU, USU and BYU) some going as much as $1500 or more. But, last year, one of the quilts at the auction sold for over $3000! I was lucky enough to quilt it for the ladies that co-created it, so I know how much work was involved in cutting, piecing, and making it absolutely gorgeous! I can hardly wait to see what is for sale this year.

And I think I’ve already mentioned this in a previous newsletter, but here’s another shameless plug for the Payson Quilt Show. Right now, I’m working on my “Almost Amish” quilt that I’ll be showcasing at the Payson trunk show (day and time is TBD). I originally thought about using solid color cottons, but after waking from a dream about this quilt (apparently I quilt in my sleep), I chose to use a distinct print for my anchor fabric and tone-on-tone colors for the blenders. The block designs are from traditional Amish patterns, and I think the combination of these specific fabrics highlights their craft in a bit more modern way.

I’ll also be teaching a class to make this Swirl Tree Skirt or Table Topper (the only difference is the slit from the outside edge to the center hole). It’s a super quick pattern and fun way to play with prints. I do hope you’ll consider signing up to make one for yourself or a friend.

In closing, the older I get the more I’m learning about myself. My upbringing wasn’t anything extraordinary. There wasn’t a lot of targeted direction in terms of setting or achieving goals. By today’s standards, we were a pretty dysfunctional family. But it’s all I knew. And, even now I’m seeing more of it manifest in each family visit. Sigh!

However, I think I’ve found the strength to overcome experiences that held me back for a long time and use them to become the person I am today. For me, life is (always) good. I hope it is for you as well.

As always, we hope you’re healthy, happy, and finding joy in each 1/4” seam.

Happy Quilting!
~ Beth and Kami
