The Paisley Dis-Patch Newsletter March 2023

March 2023 Volume 4, Issue 03

Dear Quilting Friends,

I just want to start out by thanking my friends at the Snow Goose Quilt Show in Delta, Utah for inviting us to be one of the vendors there. What a hoot! We had a lot of fun interacting with so many great people and making new friends. There is definitely something quilters have in common when it comes to fabric and quilts. As always, the Piece in the Valley quilt guild put on a great show which was well attended. I can hardly wait to go again next year!!!

Have you ever thought about the effects of change? It is something that happens to each of us either by our own choosing or brought on by other people’s choices.

During the last 15 years of my career, I was blessed with the opportunity to teach corporate teams across the company how to analyze their processes and look for ways to create more efficiency. From location to location multiple teams eliminated hundreds of hours of process redundancy. But what I didn’t expect to see while facilitating these weekly training sessions was the emotional reactions people had to changes to their routines.

Those who were team leaders or took an active role in redesigning their processes seemed to welcome various changes. It meant they would ideally make fewer errors and be able to focus on more meaningful tasks. On the flip side were people who felt like process change would negatively impact their work. After one woman watched a single step be eliminated from a much larger process, she became very nervous. When I took her aside to ask her what she was feeling and thinking she quietly said, “That’s my job.”

I then asked her how long that step took to accomplish and how often it took place. She replied that it required about an hour of her time every 2 weeks to generate a report no longer used by several groups. When she realized she could use that time to focus on other tasks, her demeanor completely relaxed.

In my own life I’ve experienced the highs and lows of change. Being a single mother wasn’t my choice and was probably the hardest thing I ever did. It’s a miracle my children survived those 10 years. While I didn’t know it at the time, that change put me in a position to receive unique financing to help me buy my first house and eventually meet my wonderful husband, Tim.

Leaving friends and family in Washington state to relocate to Virginia was tough. But that move, and similarly moving to Utah and opening the shop, introduced me to an unlimited number of cherished friends and associates that I wouldn’t have met otherwise.

Change can be everything from exhilaration to terrifying, but I’ve learned that if I trust the process, God always has a greater plan and purpose for my life than I can orchestrate on my own. I have become stronger, more resilient, and compassionate as a result of the trials I have faced and successes I have accomplished.

Please know that I am extremely sensitive to other people’s feelings and experiences. I am not suggesting that we should all treat life the same. Your challenges are not necessarily the same as mine, and we all respond to change differently. As I told one customer who recently lost her husband, “We all heal in our own way.”

I do hope that life treats you well and you have the strength, patience, and grace to persevere through the ups, downs, ins, and outs that come your way.

As always, we hope you’re healthy, happy, and finding joy in each 1/4” seam.

Happy Quilting!
