April 2022 Volume 3, Issue 4
Hello Friends,
In 1965 my grandmother, Edna Clark, took me to the 5th Avenue Theater in downtown Seattle to see the original release of The Sound of Music. 57 years later it is still my favorite movie of all time. Despite seeing the movie dozens of times since then, I still shed a few tears when Baron Von Trapp reveals his true feelings for Maria.
Edna was a true source of inspiration and creativity. She was born and lived in the same town her whole life (101 years!). She taught hundreds of 6- and 7-year-olds during her career as a 2nd grade teacher. As a result of living through the Great Depression she saved string, rubber bands and used aluminum foil. But the best part of my Grandma Clark was her uncanny ability to make a dollar stretch as far as it could go. Case in point, here’s a picture of the crazy quilt she made from a collection of men’s silk ties.
It was made using her mother’s treadle sewing machine, the only one Edna ever owned. While I haven’t made a crazy quilt of my own, I’d like to think that by some small stroke of heredity the quilts I have made were a result of her ingenuity.
Hopefully, there’s someone in your life who inspired your own resourcefulness and creativity. I encourage you to take a moment and reflect on what you learned from her (or him) and how it has honed your interests and passions. Maybe there’s more to DNA than just what we see in the mirror.
As always, we hope you’re healthy, happy and finding joy in each 1/4” seam.
Happy Quilting!
