Hi Friends,
For me, October brings an opportunity to celebrate many special events such as my mom’s birthday on the 4th (happy birthday, Mom!) my daughter Kami’s 29th birthday (for the 15th year) on the 29th as well as several grandchildren sprinkled somewhere in between the two of them. And then, of course, there’s Halloween when all the little ghouls and goblins come to ask for ooey-gooey sugary treats. I especially love seeing the younger ones who can barely say “trick or treat” even after practicing with their moms and dads for weeks before the 31st. They definitely put a smile on my face.
For several years now the city of Nephi, UT has sponsored Halloween Town a well-attended event in which the children (and some of the parents) dress up in their costumes and parade up and down the sidewalks of Main Street asking for treats from the local businesses. It’s an awesome spectacle to see so much of our community fully participate in this much-loved tradition. However, I have to admit that we weren’t fully prepared for the volume of kids coming by the store last year after being cooped up in their homes for many months. We made the unfortunate mistake of starting with only four large bags of candy and had to close the shop 45 minutes later because we ran out of treats. Ughhh! We won’t do that again. I just have to make sure there is enough Almond Joy and Milky Way candy bars in the mix to satisfy my own sweet tooth.
As an added bonus, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much creativity in one place at one time. I can’t say for sure whether the ideas start with the kids or the adults, but there are some pretty amazing costumes out there. I’ve seen homemade robots, dragons, princesses, mermaids, dinosaurs, and witches, and the list just grows from there.
